Innehåll

The course acquaints the student with the basic information concerning the important people, events, and dates in the history of the Church from the Apostolic Age to the end of the Medieval Period, followed by a survey from the Reformation to the present with special reference to key figures, events, themes, and developments.

Utbildningsmål

As a result of successfully completing this course, the student should be able to:

Knowledge and Understanding
-to introduce the student to the development and spread of Christianity from its Jewish heritage to the end of the Middle Ages
-acquaint the student with the basic information concerning the important persons, events, and dates in the history of the Church
-delineate from the student the major personalities and their contributions to this period of Church history
-introduce the student to the major movements and trends during this period
-expose the student to literature on key topics of Christian history during this period from various traditions
-comprehend the basic historical framework, theological trends, and major personages of the church during and since the Reformation
-study clearly the causes, divisions, ramifications, and heritage of the Reformation
-develop a historical-theological synthesis of the major movements since the Reformation
-gain an understanding of the particular historical-theological heritage of which the student is a part.
-form an understanding of a broad range of events, issues and ideas integral for a reflective study of Christian history and thereby enable the student to intelligently “dig deeper” after the close of the semester.
-acquire critical-thinking skills useful for future academic and vocational pursuits.

Skills and Abilities
-critically analyze and discuss the major themes, issues, problems, movements, and trends during the early period of the church and in the church during the Medieval period.  This is demonstrated in the reading outlines, discussions, and examinations
-synthesize the materials covered in this course in a chronological and comprehensive fashion
-dialogue with the major theological schools of the early church and to benefit from the strengths of those traditions
-compare the different popular movement during the Middle Age, especially in what ways they prefigured the Protestant Reformation
-identify the major theological issues raised by Reformation theologians in relation to the teachings of the Medieval Church
-articulate the significance of key themes in the Protestant, Catholic, and Radical Reformations
-critically explain the fundamental theological concerns of different varieties of Pietism and Methodism
-discuss the central features of Western theology and church politics during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
-articulate expansion, missionary models and major Christian traditions in the twentieth century.

Assessment and Approach
-assess the validity of different models for describing the relations between church and state during the history of the Christian church
-assess the validity of the comparative method in church historical investigations
-assess the validity of different theories about the Reformation and its legacies
-assess the validity of different theories concerning the spread and expansion of Christianity in the Modern and Post-Modern Era.
